Meg's 10th anniv. … post party
So Meg’s 10th anniversary came and went. I wasn’t really able to stay long, as I had other prior commitments, but it was great seeing my good friend Yeng. And it was pretty funny seeing my sister, as I was coming out of the doors. She had to pay to get in… >_
Recently, Meg, a prestige publication of MEGA Publishing Group, celebrated a decade of style, sensibility and sisterhood with a fashion-forward theme and rockin’ back-to-back events! Presented by Smart and Nokia, the music-filled bash welcomed a huge crowd comprised of Meg readers and some of today’s biggest stars.
Geared towards molding smart, confident and fashionable young women, Meg— the country’s first homegrown teen fashion and lifestyle magazine, invited all its loyal style sisters to dress in their most rockin’ glam garb and troop to Club Ascend in Bonifacio High Street. Upon entering the venue, partygoers got the chance to strike their punkiest pose for the cameras and leave their messages on the photowall.
DJ Gino from RX 93.1 served as the overall host for the night, while fellow RX DJ Rico Robles took over the mic for the main event – the announcement of the winners of the 2008 Meg Face Search and Meg Teen Choice Awards, which boasted an overwhelming 10 million online votes from Meg fanatics spread all over the country and the world.
15-year-old Gandahari Simone Carpio smiled brightly on stage while being proclaimed this year’s Meg Face Search grand prize winner. The young beauty, whose prizes include appearing on the cover of the magazine’s October issue, bagged the title by topping the online poll and getting the thumbs up from the Meg editorial team, led by editor in chief Peewee Isidro-Reyes and MEGA Publishing Group’s top executives led by Sari V. Yap and Lorraine V. Belmonte.
Several celebrities lit up the stage during the announcement of the 2008 Meg Teen Choice awardees. Among the stars who personally received their unique trophies from Bo Concept were Spongecola for Favorite Band, Luis Manzano for Favorite Male Host, Bianca Gonzales for Favorite Female Host, DJs Gino and Fran for RX as Favorite Radio Station. Singer-actress Karylle received the award for Favorite Male Celebrity on behalf of Dingdong Dantes, and a number of Pinoy Idol artists accepted the award for Favorite TV Show. Favorite UAAP Player Chris Tiu, fresh from the other night’s championship game, sent the crowd—especially the Ateneo die-hards— roaring wild when he accepted his award together with his towering teammates.
Other celebrity winners were Marian Rivera for Favorite Female Celebrity, Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson for Favorite Celebrity Couple and Shaina Magdayao for Ultimate Style Sister.
Spotted rockin’ the night away were hot celebrities from both showbiz and fashion worlds— from GMA Artist Center were Dominic and Felix Roco, actresses Rhian Ramos, Andi Eigenmann, Kris Bernal, Schinina Juban, ka-Blog hosts Lucky Mercado, Andrea Torres, Mico Aytona and Monica Verallo, and QTV’s chef Rosebud Benitez.
Pretty faces that partied all night were beauty queen Abby Cruz and models Isabel Daza, Jess Wilson, and Vicky Herrera, who came with sisters Rosario and Teresa of Project Runway.
Also having a good time were PBB-Season 2’s Bodie Cruz, Yen Lim-Galagnara, Nel Rapiz and Bea Saw, PBB-Teen Edition’s Mikee Tan, and PDA’s Inaki Ting.
Ten lucky partygoers were randomly selected to receive cool gift packs from Smart, while Meg Face Search finalist Meryl Perey took home a Skechers watch for being the “Punkiest Girl of the Night.” Acer gave one ecstatic Meg reader a brand new Aspire laptop as part of a special raffle.
Odyssey Live provided an impressive band performance line-up that included Hale, Callalily, Pedicab and DJ Mark Nicoasia. Rock band ChicoSci served as the event’s closing musical act.
The Meg’s 10th Anniversary Party was made possible with event sponsors: Del Monte, Zen Zest, Natural Source, Crocs, Kotex, Adidas EDT, Skin Food, G-Max, White Hat, Style and Carry, Watsons Personal Care Store.

returns of the comeback
As I have been scouring the net for some interesting topics, I came across two bits of news that piqued my interest.
First off, Lance Armstrong is set to return to the milieu that brought him worldwide acclaim — his old stomping grounds, the Tour de France. After setting the record by winning the tour seven consecutive years in a row and retiring, Mr. Armstrong is ready to take back the throne he left behind and conquer the heights of the cycling world in the 2009 tour. Read more.
Secondly, and closer to my heart, former grunge rock headliners Alice in Chains are set to make a comeback, 13 years after the untimely demise of frontman Layne Stayley. NME reports that the band is ready to record a new album with new vocalist William DuVall. I wonder how the new Chains will hold up…

another case of stealing
I got a call from my cousin, Nikki, asking for some help, about a week ago. Apparently, a Multiply user was selling my cousins merchandise… Not the originals, but knock-offs. Nikki, along with a few partners own a local fashion boutique here in Manila. It started out as a sell from home type of thing, until demand for their goods rocketed. You’ve probably heard of Sapato Manila, at one time or another or perhaps passed by their store in Powerplant Mall in Rockwell. But, as most good things go, you usually get a few people that will try to ruin it for you, or take advantage in any way they can. Luckily, we were tech saavy enough to get some proof of this blatant pilfering of intellectual property.
I didn’t write anything at the time, as I didn’t want to preempt any legal steps my cousin and her partners were going to take, and we also wanted to catch the offender off guard. But I spoke to Nikki tonight, and found out they already sent their formal letter and are just deciding what course of action to take. Of course, being the curious web crawler (not the Spider-Man variety) that I am, I decided to take a peek at the offending site. Lo and behold, the albums of the merchandise were gone.
But here’s more proof, anyway (thanks to Mozilla’s Screengrab!).
Just a little note though (as a disclaimer): not all of the items on sale in these two albums were from Sapato Manila. The others may be licensed… but, I wouldn’t bet on it.
I’ll post updates, when I hear again from my cousin. But for the rest of us, on the web or even in the regular offline retail, this should serve as a warning. There are people out there trying to make a buck out of our creativity and hard work. There are so many stories of plagiarism out there at the moment. Let’s just hope we can remain vigilant and catch the offending parties.

chow king: chao fan
“Iba ang kain pag kanin” … is how the new Chow King Chao Fan tagline goes.
And with the current rice shortage, the tagline really holds more meaning, especially for people that look for rice as a staple with every meal. Good thing for us, Chow King is currently offering their Chao Fan (literally translated as Fried Rice) at lower prices and with more tasty ingredients.
At the Yehey!-Chow King Bloggers Event held at CK Eastwood, we were given a sample of the repriced and new improved offerings. And I can honestly say that all Chow King lovers and all rice freaks are gonna go nuts over the fare.
- Pork Chao Fan goes for PhP 39 – A tasty and flavorful mixture of stir-fried rice and pork slices mixed in a special sauce of shrimp paste, sacha sauce and kangkong leaves and garnished with a sprinkling of spring onions.
- Beef Chao Fan goes for PhP 49 – Another tasty and flavorful rice mix with beef chunks mixed in with a special beef sauce, cabbage, carrot bits and sprinkled with spring onions.
- Spicy Chao Fan goes for PhP 79 – Chicken Balls and tender beef cuts are the main ingredient in this tasty fried rice mix, seasoned with hot chili garlic spices and thick sweet soya sauce, with some red and green peppers for additional flavoring and texture.
- Yang Chow goes for PhP 79 – The most popular fried rice in the bunch is a flavorful mix of chorizo bits, roasted pork asado bits, a beaten egg, some fresh and crisp vegetables and topped with generous servings of sauteéd shrimp.
Of course, you always have the option to top your rice with any of the dimsum (or anything on the Chow King menu, really) available. So head on over to the nearest Chow King to get your fix of rice. You know you’ve been cutting down… but now you can enjoy your favorite staple without the guilt.

Yehey-Yahoo journey
Over the past few years, I have gotten used to seeing people leave, resign and move on to other jobs. One of the latest Yehey! employees to make the leap was our eComm manager and resident Tech Evangelist (and a huge superman freak… hence the pose), Jonas de los Reyes.
‘Nas’ (as we like to call him in the office) started out in Yehey many years back as a Channel Editor before moving to Chikka for a brief stint. After testing the waters in other areas, Jonas found his way home and returned to Yehey as the eComm Manager of Kaban, our payment gateway and online merchant enabler. And in another twist of fate, now ‘Nas’ finds himself in the US version of Yehey — Yahoo. ^_^
Oftentimes I catch him online… and I never fail to rag on him, whenever we start a conversation. He knows I’m just playing around when I call him a TRAITOR. =P And this post is proof of that (proof that I’m joking)… because despite his own shameless plug, I am also trying to spread the article of his interview. So, if you haven’t caught it floating around the net yet, here’s your chance to catch up on a bit of reading.

food food food
I love getting invites to food events. I get to sample tasty new treats, photograph the dishes, eat more food, visit new places, chow on more grub. I’m sure you get the picture. I like tasting and eating food. And tomorrow is gonna be a real foodie adventure. Appetite Magazine and Greenbelt in association with 2nd Avenue have invited a few of us to the grand launching of The Tasting Room, “a gastronomic tour featuring specially designed tasting menus from restaurants, bars, and wine shops.” Tomorrow evening, I’ll get to satisfy my palate with tasty morsels from 15 different establishments, namely:
Kai, Tropezz, Bubba Gump, Solihiya, Max Brenner, Mr. Rockerfeller, La Maison, Haiku, Italianni’s, Cyma, Capricciosa, Mezze, Nuvo, Gaudí and Fish & Co.
But don’t fret, if you aren’t part of tomorrow’s grand launch. The The Tasting Room promo will last the whole month of May. So foodies, don’t worry. You can still go on the gastronomic adventure, and sample the best of food and drink that the participating restos have to offer.
If you wanna know more, grab a copy of Appetite Magazine’s April-May 2008 issue. Aside from the delicious articles, you’ll also find some Tasting Room coupons, a few discounts and even free parking privileges.
Stay tuned for a little review and a bunch of photos!

orlina trophy named after Jun Bernardino
I read from Leng’s Multiply site that the PBA‘s Perpetual Trophy, designed by national artist Ramon Orlina, is to be named after the late, great Jun Bernardino, as tribute to his work and service as the longest serving PBA commissioner.
The award is given to a team that wins the All-Flipino conference three times in a row. Not an easily achievable feat. But this serves as a testament to Jun B.’s achievements in the PBA world, as he brought the country’s premiere basketball league to its glory days.
